In his book The Loyalty Effect, Fred Reichheld notes that on average, U.S. corporations lose half their customers in five years and half their employees in four. On top of this, he shows that disloyalty at current rates has been shown to stunt corporate performance by 25 to 50 percent. That’s incredible! For any company looking for long-term growth and stability, such defection rates are simply unsustainable. Continue reading »

We’ve all heard intriguing things about “company culture,” but what exactly is it? Simply put, a company’s culture is the shared values and practices of the company: it guides how employees act, think, and feel. It’s obviously important because a culture sets the tone for how customers feel when they interact with every level of a company. As you might imagine, a company’s culture is critical to its success or failure in our highly competitive business world. The good news is that those companies with cultures aligned to their core values – what they have a passion for – outperform their competitors by 200% or more! Continue reading »

The popular ABC television program 20/20 recently aired a special about four self-made Billionaires, in which two of them in particular, Tony Hsieh of Zappos.com and Lynn Tilton of Patriarch, talked explicitly about the importance of working toward a larger purpose – and not just for money. For Tilton, it was all about the praiseworthy goal of saving jobs, and for Hsieh it was having a company culture in which both he and his employees would enjoy working. (As a side note, Hsieh’s book Delivering Happiness is a must read!) Continue reading »

Chip Conley reports in his book, Peak, that while real income in America has risen 16% in the past thirty years, the percentage of people who describe themselves as “very happy” has fallen from 36% to 29%. Clearly, money doesn’t buy happiness. People seem to be declining in their ability to find meaning in their vocation/work. We need to rediscover the power of seeing our vocation as having meaning beyond just money. Historically, such beliefs contributed to making this country an unrivaled economic force, and one that needs more attention by employers and employees alike. This blog traces some interesting history on the subject. Continue reading »

In fact, of the total effectiveness of communication, our word choice stands at a mere 7%, while our tone ranks at an impressive 38%. So what takes up the remaining 55%? Body language.

Research is showing that much of what companies have assumed about their customer interactions is false.   Continue reading »

Compusoft was honored to host an unforgettable evening with Reon Schutte, a former South African Special Forces soldier who was captured and placed into one of the world’s most brutal prisons for nearly thirteen years.

Inspirational doesn’t fully describe the experience of hearing Reon’s story, as it seems to penetrate the core of what we all hope for in life, and fear. Reon was captured in 1992 and placed into Zimbabwe’s infamously brutal Chikurubi prison. So brutal in fact that organizations like Amnesty International and the Red Cross rated it among the world’s worst prisons. The survival rate of Chikurubi prisoners stands at a paltry 10%.
